Study Authorization Support for U.S. Citizens
U.S. citizens can normally enter Spain and the Schengen Area without a short-stay visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Time previously spent in other Schengen countries also counts toward this limit.
If you entered Spain legally without a student visa and have been admitted to a higher-education program at SLU Madrid, you may be eligible to apply for a long-term study-stay authorization from within Spain, without returning to the United States to apply through a Spanish consulate.
Important: This Is Not a Visa Application
A student visa is issued by a Spanish consulate before travelling to Spain. When the process is initiated after arrival, the student applies directly for an authorization to stay in Spain for higher education.
This option is only available when the student satisfies the applicable immigration requirements and files the application within the required deadlines.
Who May Be Eligible?
You may be able to apply from Spain when you:
- Are at least 18 years old
- Are still legally present in Spain
- Have been admitted to a recognized higher-education institution
- Are enrolled in a qualifying full-time higher-education program
- Have paid the applicable enrollment or tuition fees
- Have sufficient financial resources
- Have qualifying health insurance
- Meet the remaining immigration and documentation requirements
Applications from within Spain under this procedure are limited to qualifying higher-education studies.
Do Not Wait Until Your 90 Days Are Almost Over
The application must generally be submitted:
- At least two months before your legal stay in Spain expires
- At least two months before your studies begin
Limited exceptions may apply when specific enrollment dates or other exceptional circumstances make compliance with the study-start deadline impossible. These exceptions must be properly justified and should not be assumed to apply automatically.
Because previous travel within the Schengen Area may reduce the number of days remaining, your complete travel history should be reviewed before calculating the filing deadline.
Documents Commonly Required
Depending on your circumstances, the application may include:
- Completed official application form
- Valid U.S. passport
- Evidence of legal entry and current legal stay
- SLU Madrid admission and enrollment documentation
- Evidence that the required tuition or enrollment fees have been paid
- Proof of sufficient financial means
- Qualifying health-insurance documentation
- Criminal-record certificate when the authorized stay will exceed six months
- Proof of payment of the government application fee
- Apostilles and sworn translations for applicable foreign public documents
The Spanish immigration authorities require a passport generally valid for at least one year, qualifying health insurance, sufficient financial resources and proof of admission and enrollment. Foreign public documents may require an apostille and an official sworn translation into Spanish.
